Best Time for a Nile Cruise: Month by Month
When to take a Nile cruise between Luxor and Aswan: temperatures month by month, high and low season, and what to expect in summer.
The best time for a Nile cruise is October to April, when days in Luxor and Aswan are around 22–30°C and nights are cool. The busiest weeks are Christmas–New Year and Easter. From May to September it is very hot, often above 40°C, but prices are lower and visits start early in the morning.
October and November
The heat of summer fades through October and by November days are warm and dry, usually around 28–32°C. It's a good balance: comfortable weather, fewer people than in winter, and every ship and dahabiya is sailing.
December to February
The coolest months, with days around 22–26°C and nights that can drop below 10°C. Bring a warm layer for early starts, the balloon ride and evenings on deck.
This is high season. The weeks around Christmas and New Year fill up first, so book cabins well ahead.
March and April
Spring is warm and bright, climbing to the low and mid 30s by late April. Occasional desert winds can bring a hazy, dusty day. Easter is busy.
May to September
Summer is hot, often over 40°C in Luxor and Aswan. Cruises still run all year because the High Dam keeps the river level steady. Ships are air-conditioned and have pools, and visits are planned for early morning and late afternoon.
If you don't mind the heat, it's the best time for lower prices and quieter temples. Most dahabiyas sail only from October to April.
Dates worth planning around
On 22 February and 22 October the rising sun reaches the statues in the inner sanctuary of the Great Temple at Abu Simbel. Both dates draw big crowds, so book early if you want to be there.
